Almond Dream Salted Caramel Ice Cream

almond dream tub

Contains: nuts, soy

Free from: gluten, palm oil

This shit right here is the goddamn tits.

Seriously, holy fuck.

Salted caramel wouldn’t have been my first choice of flavour back in my non-vegan days but good GOD Almond Dream knocked it out of the park with this little tub of (cripplingly expensive) heaven.

If you’re like me and the coconut icecreams don’t really float your boat, then you need to seriously consider trying this instead. It is creamy and smooth with a real punch of that classic rich caramel flavour; though sometimes the vein of caramel that runs through it seems to be concentrated at the bottom of the tub. I like to view this as justification for eating an entire tub in one sitting.

But if “grab spoon” isn’t inventive enough for you, here are some serving suggestions:

Pair it with molten chocolate cake and strawberries. Some say this emulates dying and going to heaven.

Make yourself a kick-ass sundae with chocolate chips, sprinkles, and Choc Shot drizzle.

I don’t want to be dramatic and say I feel personally victimised by the fact that one tub will cost between £4 and £5… but I do. STOP TRYING TO KEEP US APART.

Butttt seeing as I buy it whenever it is on offer as a “well done for doing life” kinda treat, the price doesn’t get me down too much….

Can I give this thing a six? It deserves a six.

Alpro Chocolate and Hazelnut Ice cream

Alpro+Icecream+Hazelnut+Choco+UK_540x576_p

Contains: Palm Oil, Nuts

Free from: Gluten, Soy

Ice cream has always been one of my favourite deserts and luckily turning vegan didn’t mean cutting it out entirely with Booja Booja (if you’ve got the offshore bank account for it), Almond Dream and now Alpro pumping out vegan friendly alternatives. My choice this time round was the Hazelnut and Chocolate with the other flavours being Vanilla, and Coconut. At £3.50 a pop, these won’t break the bank and its non-vegan counterparts retail for around the same.

To kick things off, one of the first things to note is that like any ice cream, dairy or not, this thing requires a pick axe to get any out. Other than that, Alpro have nailed the classic brown velvet sheen that you’d expect to find when opening up a big old tub. This is definitely transferred to the texture as well where it scores highly for smoothness but it’s also got a chunky-chewy quality to it. So texture? Good. Taste? Chocolaty-ness? Whilst tasty and definitely a nice hint of chocolate in there (GREAT for those who don’t like it super rich), the lack of even a tinge of hazelnut was a slight let down for me.

Could you feed this to an omnivore? Absolutely. Would they know the difference? Not a drop – this product is almost identical to dairy ice creams. It’s soft, it’s creamy and it’s got enough chocolate flavours to satisfy your tough workday cravings.

Overall, this was a great dairy-free alternative. They’re no different to your everyday ice cream in price and you still get the satisfying first dig into a creamy tub. I have a bone to pick with the lack of hazelnut but as a chocolate ice cream? This is definitely a good freezer filler.
